It's time to build

The built world is entering a crucible moment. AI is driving the largest infrastructure buildout in history: data centers, power plants, and transmission lines. We have never needed this much infrastructure this fast.

But infrastructure doesn’t grow on trees. It has to be built – by contractors. Electricians. Pipefitters. Ironworkers. Linemen. They are the heroes who will actually deliver this buildout.

In their quest to deliver infrastructure for the 21st century, contractors face a formidable foe: The Frankenstack. The Frankenstack is the tangle of 1980s software, spreadsheets, and paper that haunts every contractor’s back office. Unsurprisingly, the Frankenstack is sapping the collective energy of builders everywhere.

Today we’re announcing a $40M Series B, led by Battery Ventures with participation from Bessemer and Coatue, to kill the Frankenstack for good. Thousands of contractors already run on Miter, the AI operating system for construction…and we’re just getting started.

Miter in the AI era

Most of this round goes to one thing: building AI products for contractors, and hiring the engineers to build them.

The AI buildout runs on construction labor, and labor runs on the unglamorous stuff. Onboarding a hundred new hires this quarter. Getting a crew paid correctly across three states. Knowing in real time whether a job is making or bleeding money. Do those well and you can take on more work. Do them badly and you can’t.

Miter is the heart and lung machine for the contractors shepherding a new era. We’ve used AI heavily inside Miter for years. Putting it into the system that pays a hundred thousand people every week isn’t something we take lightly.

What’s new since our Series A?

We’ve grown. A lot.
Miter is now the market-leading workforce management platform for contractors, and growth is accelerating. Since our Series A we’ve nearly tripled our customer count; thousands of contractors now run on Miter: general contractors like Truebeck and Great Falls, specialty contractors like Marathon Electrical and Foster Specialty Floors, enterprises like Clayco, Haugland, and 3E, and SMBs like San Diego Shade and A-1 Modular. Today, roughly 2 of every 100 American construction workers get paid through Miter.

Down with Frankenstack.
Miter launched with a simple idea: running construction payroll shouldn’t feel like stubbing your toe. A few years later, we realized that payroll is just one head of the Frankenstack. Contractors are also duct-taping together time tracking, HR, safety, equipment, and job costing across a dozen software systems that never talk to each other. All these systems rely on labor data: who worked, on which job, on which cost code, for how long, for how much. Labor data is the central node of a construction business. To help contractors defeat Frankenstack, we’re building tools that allow contractors to run more of their business in a single AI-native system. In the last six months we’ve launched Safety, Performance, Data Studio, and Accounts Payable, and we’re just getting started.

Internal AI is everywhere.
We’ve been AI-heavy internally for a long time, and not in the “we bought some seats” way. We built Deflektor, which handles routine support tickets on its own. Miter Agent gives every Mitosaur the context that used to be scattered across tickets, calls, docs, and systems, so a support rep can investigate a gnarly customer issue in minutes instead of routing it to engineering. Our code review agent triages low-risk changes so human review lands where judgment actually matters. Launch managers use AI to turn customer activity into an action queue. New Mitosaurs use it to learn prevailing wage and certified payroll in their first week instead of their first quarter. It adds up to two things we care about a lot: shipping products faster, and helping customers faster.

What hasn’t changed

Contractors are our heroes.
Miter is mission-critical infrastructure for the people who build mission-critical infrastructure. Nothing gets our hearts racing like spotting a customer in the wild: a Sheedy crane against the San Francisco sunset, a JRCruz crew topping out an NYC skyscraper, the Haugland logo at Citi Field. Our customers are building the data centers, roads, power plants, and housing that will define the 21st century. We’re lucky to be part of their stories.

Mitosaurs are awesome.
We’re building an unusually strong culture with an unusually long time horizon. Mitosaurs come in all shapes and sizes, but all of us are low-ego, obsessed, and optimistic. We love winning as a team, and we love the journey more than the destination. Most of all, we love dinosaurs.

It’s Day 1.
Miter customers are the future of construction. The average Miter customer is growing 5x faster than the industry, and once contractors join Miter, they stay. With our industry-leading retention, we’ll be serving our customers for decades.

And yet…we’re still absurdly early. Today, only 2% of contractors run their business on Miter. Be part of the team that will take us to 10%, and 20%, and 50% and beyond…

See you on the jobsite!

Connor Watumull is the co-founder and CEO of Miter, a workforce management platform purpose-built for construction. Before starting Miter, he spent time as a product manager, investor at Bessemer Venture Partners, and even moonlighted at a construction accounting firm — getting hands-on with certified payroll, union rules, prevailing wage requirements, and the day-to-day complexity of running jobs. Connor launched Miter in 2021 to help contractors simplify payroll, stay compliant, and build with confidence.
